Extensible markup language, or XML, consists
of a set of standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium
for identifying common elements of documents to transfer data
between different systems. For an increasing number of organizations
with legacy systems, XML is the way to bridge those systems
to the Web. XML can extend an existing database to the web
at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
What's so great about XML?
Anybody can manipulate
XML documents on any platform, in any language. For example,
we can work with an organization with Cobol programmers on
the mainframe and manipulate XML documents in Cobol. We can
send them XML documents from any system, and they can process
them. With today's shortened schedules and increased demands,
customers are looking for the most efficient way to meet these
demands. XML is fast becoming the standard in business and
government.
